As a photographer, documenting pre-prom is a unique and exciting opportunity to capture the energy and excitement of young people on the cusp of an important milestone in their lives. My approach to documenting pre-prom involves a careful balance of posed and candid shots that capture the mood and emotions of the moment.
While photographing pre-proms and working with young adults, I first like to establish a rapport with everyone – building trust and creating an atmosphere of ease and comfort. This helps to ensure that everyone has fun and feels natural in front of the camera, which translates into more authentic and engaging photographs!
When I was invited to document Selena’s pre-prom, she had told me all about her outfit theme and I was so excited! We started photos earlier in the day, to document her getting ready – from getting her makeup done at Markville Mall to getting dressed at home – and documenting all the details in between (the Unionville High School Prom invitation, along with all of her jewellery and accessories, and we can’t forget about the heart-shaped heels!!). When Selena was all ready to go, we travelled together to her pre-prom celebration at a friend’s home in Stouffville. She had so much fun posing for group shots with friends! They were such a fun bunch, and we were able to get a great mix of candid and formal photos. Formal photos captured the beauty and elegance of the outfits and accessories, and the candids totally captured the playful and spontaneous moments that happened naturally when her friends came together.
After hair and makeup, Selena went back home to put on her dress.
My goodness, this was a dress to remember!
