For those who are unfamiliar with the term ‘cake smash’, it is literally a session involving a cake… that gets smashed!
In almost all cases, the celebrant is just turning one and being introduced to cake (and icing and all the goodies on top) for the very first time. In this case, however, we have Rachelle who wanted to celebrate her twenty-sixth birthday with a cake smash – adult style! Having an adult cake smash session on my ASPIRE LIST, I was so stoked to help make her birthday wish come true.
We had planned for our session to be outdoors – we brought our props and banner and cake to a nice field in Markham, Ontario and started to set up. The whole morning leading up to this time, the skies were a little overcast, but clear of rain (which made for perfect shooting quality)… But as soon as we set up our fabric banner, and laid down our blanket, the sky became dark and the rain started to POUR. As we sat in my van, watching it all come down, it seemed like our session was doomed. But such as the adult life, not everything goes as planned; we had to find a solution.
We decided to take everything indoors, and while the fabric banner was in the dryer, I set up my pink backdrop. I must say, our session ended up being so much fun indoors (even though the sun came out as soon as we set up inside – go figure). We had lots of laughs, champagne, and the cake was definitely smashed!
